Step in for Kids on Australian Story

Monday, 22 September marks a special milestone for Step in for Kids, with our Founder, Sarah Kopp, featuring on ABC’s Australian Story.

Behind the scenes, Sarah has been reconnecting with people from her past and revisiting difficult memories- laying bare her journey to shine a much-needed spotlight on grooming.

The episode, titled Only Fifteen, follows Sarah as she shares her story as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, alongside family members, old school friends, and through dance- showing both the challenges of her past and the mission ahead with Step in for Kids.

Sarah describes the experience as “nerve-racking but necessary”:

“It’s a vulnerable thing to put everything out there, especially when a huge part of my story was centred around keeping my perpetrator's secret. To now raise awareness of grooming- a topic that’s still too often taboo- is an opportunity to see change. Grooming is currently enabled by the very systems designed to protect children. Having these uncomfortable conversations is key to shaking this up and showing that the ‘monster under the bed’ is rarely a stranger. It’s usually someone known, hidden in plain sight.”

Only Fifteen airs on ABC’s Australian Story, Monday 22 September at 8:00pm, and will be available to stream afterwards on ABC iView.
